Advantages and Disadvantages of Games On-Demand

The recent unveiling of the new Sony PSP-Go and plans to launch OnLive's on-demand games technology in the last quarter of 2009 brings the issue of on-demand gaming back to the forefront of technology debates. If successful, on-demand gaming technology will deliver very high quality games on any computer device without need for a console while standard features such as single and multi-player options remain available. However, like every other technological developments there are bound to be challenges that would have to be overcome for this technology to be widely accepted.

Advantages of on-demand games

- Video games will be difficult to steal or copy has they will no longer be available for download.
- There will be a substantial increase in profits for game developers' although at the expense of retailers'.
- Hard core gamers could get special broadband packages from Internet service providers (ISPs) to cope with high bandwidth demands which could also lead to advances in other areas such as managing super-fast broadband networks.
- Gamers can play high quality games without buying or upgrading hardware.

Disadvantages of on-demand games

- The technology will only be available to a few gamers, as broadband connections are still not up to scratch in many parts of the world.
- Only fast internet connections will benefit from the on-demand streaming.
- Risk that the game servers could become overloaded and crash if millions of users try to access a single game at the same time.
- Not everyone is receptive to change. Some die-hard gamers will still prefer to keep physical copies displayed on their shelves.
- Who owns the games before, during and after subscription?
