World of Warcraft Gold Guide to Enchanting

As a new World of Warcraft player in my early levels I struggled to make gold. This in part was due to my early choice of Enchanting as a primary profession. In those early days - before the Wrath of the Lich King and The Burning Crusade - the Enchanting profession was hard to master and difficult to level. To some extent, it still is, but the WOTLK has improved things a little as I'll explain.

So What's Enchanting?
For those new to World of Warcraft and to the professions, Enchanting is the ability to magically enhance an item of gear with favorable characteristics, such as increased armor or stamina as an example. These enhancements - or enchants - require enchanting material - such as dusts and essences - obtained from disenchanting other magically enhanced items - usually uncommon (green), rare (blue) and epic (purple) gear obtained from drops and instance runs. The higher the iLevel (level needed to use it) of the gear dropped and its rarity, the more exotic the range of enchanting material is yielded when that item is disenchanted.

Leveling Enchanting Can Be Hard
Having to rely on drops of greens and blues to provide the basic material for enchanting is one of the reasons that enchanting can be hard to level. After all, its not like grinding for cloth where the drop rate can be very high - depending on where you grind. Another reason is that to advance in levels past Journeyman you have to actually 'Enchant' something. This means finding someone with gear, or your own, that needs enchanting.

Show Me The Money
When looking at messages in the Trade Channel of major cities, you'll often see Enchanters hawking their wares. They're looking for items to enchant to increase their skill- and hopefully make some gold into the bargain. After all, many players would like to have their armor magically enchanted with better stats or their swords made to glow in the presence of the undead!

But unless you have a very high skill level in Enchanting, selling low level enchants can be hard work and, frankly, not worth the effort. In my opinion, disenchanting is a better strategy to make money. Look for low priced greens and blues on the Auction House and disenchant them into their constituent dusts and essences and sell these on the Auction House for a profit. You'll soon amass a sizable stack of gold as enchanting mats still sell well, even in WOTLK.

Become A Tailor
Don't forgot that you can have at least two primary professions in World of Warcraft and choosing Tailoring as a complementary profession to Enchanting works very well. This is because even Tailors of a low skill level can produce a range of green cloth items that can also be disenchanted. This yield enchanting mats can be either feed your Enchanting or put for sale for profit.

Enchanting in WOTLK
The coming of Wrath of the Lich King has breathed a new lease of life into the Enchanting profession with the new ability of Scribes to produce armor and weapon vellums. Enchanters can now enchant a vellum which holds the enchant for later use, allowing them to sold on the Auction House. This releases the Echanter from the task of having to find clients, but adds the cost of purchasing the vellum. Still, this is a great improvement - at least for higher level enchants - and is a potential gold mine as knew enchants are released into the game.
