What is Mafia Wars

Mafia Wars is a text based interactive game by Zynga that has taken the social networking sites by storm. The premise is to gather as many Mafia family members as possible, earn as much cash and loot as you can and level up in order to become the strongest family in New York and recently Cuba. This is achieved by doing "jobs", purchasing properties, attacking rival Mafias and defending yourself from such attacks. All of these actions give you a payday and experience points which contribute to your advancement.

I personally play Mafia Wars on Facebook. I have never played such an addictive game in all my 39 years. Soon after I started playing I found myself sneaking peaks during the day to check on my cash flow, see if I've been attacked, or do a job or two. I can honestly say that not one day goes by that I do not interact with Mafia Wars. I finally decide to share my experience and knowledge of the game and perhaps gain a few more members in my Mafia crew.

Secrets and Strategy

The Larger the Mafia the Better

The first priority of any beginner is to concentrate on growing the size of his Mafia. Mafia size is what determines your strength and the acquisition of good bonuses. It is a good idea to try to get many players who are of high rank and levels as possible to join your Mafia, but do not limit yourself to just high ranking members because even the low ranking players add to your number of Mafia members which translate to strength. Also there is your Top Mafia to consider. These are positions in your Mafia that make up the top tier of your family. You need to appoint someone from your Mafia to fill each position in order to complete a crew and in turn gain bonuses from jobs and fights. You will want to fill these positions with high ranking veteran players because they are the ones who will provide you with the best bonuses. There are six positions to fill. These are as follows with the correlating bonuses dependent upon the which Mafia member you promote to that position:

Mastermind : More experience from jobs.

Wheelman : Use less energy on jobs

Buttonman : More bonus on attacks

Bodyguard : More bonus on successful defense

Safecracker : More cash from fights

Bagman : More cash from jobs

Here are some tips on recruiting Mafia Wars family members. I have included four recruitment strategies. I'm sure there are more and I do welcome any ideas you may have, just leave a comment and perhaps I can include it in future updates. The four methods I have used are as follows:

1. Invite Existing Network Friends to Play

This is the first thing you want to do. Ask any of your friends on Facebook or whatever social site you play Mafia Wars on to join your Mafia. If your friends have no interest in playing it is okay. You can just tell them that they do not need to play but just subscribe to the application and become part of your family because what is important is the number of Mafia members you have. If they are your friends they really shouldn't mind doing this because it really does not affect them in any way to become a part of Mafia Wars.

You can even use the built-in Mafia Wars invite and select all your friends. After you press send you will be given the opportunity to also write a personal message. I would suggest you do send a personal message that way it will not look like they are being spammed

2. Forums/Groups

This option is a great and can garner you many family members. You can go to any forums that you frequent and post a link to your profile and the Mafia Wars recruitment message found on your "My Mafia" category on the Mafia Wars interface. Remember to also write a little personalized message. Also there are many groups dedicated to growing Mafia Wars families and I find that it is probably the best way to recruit members. All you have to do is go to the groups tab on your Facebook profile and click on it. After you are taken to the groups page type in a search for Mafia Wars. Many groups will come up. You can join one or all if you want and you can either follow the instructions that they give you or go directly to the comments section at the bottom and write a message for people to add you to their Mafia. You can provide your profile link and Mafia Wars invite link or you can simply just write "Add Me Please". A person who reads these comments will click on either your provided links or your name and add you as a friend. When you accept their friendship you should go to your Mafia Wars and invite them to join yourself (that's the respectful way) or you can wait until they invite you. After you post your message you can also go through the comments and seek friendship/Mafia Wars members yourself by clicking on their links or names. I strongly advise you to always add a little message whenever you request a friendship such as, "For Mafia Wars" or "Mafia Wars". This helps the potential friend to distinguish the request from spam and authentic Mafia Wars requests. You can grow your Mafia without limits doing this as long as you have the time and the determination.

3. Other Social Sites

You can also use other social sites such as MySpace to recruit since many people who have Facebook accounts also have MySpace accounts. In fact Mafia Wars is also available to play on MySpace. There will invariably some who are not members of Facebook and your recruitment may entice them to join and play Mafia Wars through Facebook.

Another site that can be utilized is Twitter. The best way is to use the "Tweetlater" and with the auto-welcome you can paste your recruitment links. The only problem is that you have a limited space to do so. so you you may have to use a service such as tinyurl.com. There you can change any long link to a shorter link which will be easier to fit in places where space is limited for long urls.

4. Blogs

This method involves looking for people who have blogs dedicated to Mafia Wars. There you can request their friendship and also take advantage of their suggestions to grow your Mafia. Many also give you the opportunity to advertise through comments similar to a forum. The bonus is that these blogs are usually from avid Mafia War players that have tons of experience and can offer you some great tips and strategies that will give you an advantage in the game.

Inventory

The inventory in Mafia Wars is extensive. There are many weapons, armors and vehicles to purchase, loot from jobs and fights and receive through gifting. I will be talking about looting and gifting later but for now I will just touch upon the inventory that you can purchase.

In he beginning you will have to make a little money from the only job that does not require a weapon. After you build up a little cash you will need to start purchasing weapons in order to complete other jobs. I suggest that in the beginning just purchase what you need to get jobs done. When you have graduated a couple more levels you should then start buying multiples of every weapon, armor and vehicles. You should do this because the way the game works is that it gives every member of your mafia 1 weapon, 1 armor and 1 vehicle to fight with. So the more you have, the better equipped your Mafia is, and the better equipped they are the better the chances of you winning the fight. Keep in mind however that you will need to also at this time start investing in some properties which I will now discuss.

Properties

Properties are important because they will provide you with a steady income that you can reinvest into our inventories and into more properties. I will tell you right now that Mafia Mike's Bars are the best investment. They are affordable and give you the most money for your investment They also do not require upkeep or protection from being robbed. The only catch is that you must have certain amount of Mafia members to purchase one and they number increases after every buy, so that is another reason why you need a large Mafia. I suggest that you purchase as many as you can get your hands on. All other properties can also contribute to your cash flow and you really should purchase some when you can. I personally do not like the Italian Restaurants or the Rent house the return is just not that good compared to the price you pay for them. I would rather save up and invest that money elsewhere such as 5-Star Hotel and Mega Casino which do have larger payouts and help build up your cash flow. Keep in mind though that if you are going to purchase these larger properties you are going to need a large and well equipped Mafia in order to fend off any heist attempts.

Fighting

A large part of Mafia Wars is fighting, whether it is defensive or offensive. If you are going to be an aggressive player who will do a lot of attacking there are some things you should keep in mind that will give you the edge in your fights.

Choose someone who has a smaller Mafia than you.

Click on the Mafia member who you want to fight and check out is stats. The biggest tell will be his fight record. If he has a poor record then he is a good target.

Also when you check out his stats, always look at his weaponry. If it seems his weaponry is larger and more formidable than your own then I suggest trying another target.

Be sure to have large amount of attack skill points.

I personally take a more defensive approach to the game. I will at times pick a fight with a rival Mafia but it is not the crux of my game play. I like to build up my defense points more than my attack points. Usually I will keep it at 60/40, six defense for every 4 attack. I feel that I have more control that way because I cannot choose who attacks me so I like be prepared with a good defense, but with attacking I have control over who to fight and will choose only fights I am pretty sure I can win.

When you do choose to fight you can usually choose to a full blown attack, sucker punch someone, or rob their properties. These will depend upon the circumstances.

Attack: You will do this when you are pretty sure you will be able to win the fight.

Sucker Punch: This is usually done when the rival has attacked you or one of your family members and you are not able to attack because you are not strong enough. A sucker punch will inflict damage as warning that his actions are not tolerated. You should only do this if you are pretty sure that other members of your Mafia who are stronger will have your back or you will just incite a retaliation and you can get beat up pretty bad.

Robbing: Robbing is done usually to gain a lot of money and to punish a rival for an unprovoked attack. Robbing consists of attacking a persons property (ie) Mega Casino, 5-Star Hotel. You can actually rob someones property until you put it out of business. The robbed person then must spend a certain amount of money to repair and protect the attacked property.

Hit list: This is an interesting option. If you have been attacked and the attacker is stronger than you, you can put him on the hit list. You will be required to put up a bounty and any person can attack him and claim the bounty. The bounty that you put up will be have a fee of 20% of the amount that you enter. For example, if you put up $10,000 the available bounty for the hit will be $8,000. This feature is a good way to be able to retaliate for unprovoked attacks and that should be the only reason anyone should put someone on the hit list.

Skill Points

Skill points are what makes up your Mafia Wars character. You have five aspects to your character and skill points must be judiciously applied to each aspect. Skill points will basically determine the strength of your character. These five aspects are a follows:

Attack: This determines your ability to do damage to a rival and win more fights. The more skill points the better your attack ability.

Defense: This determines your ability to repel attacks from rivals.

Health: This determines your ability to survive fights. Every time you attack or are attacked health points will be expended. The more health points you have the fights you can engage or the longer you will be able to hold out in a long intense fight.

Energy: This determines your ability to complete jobs and level up. The more energy you have the more jobs you can complete and the faster you can level up.

Stamina: This loosely related to your health. Stamina points are used every time you attack someone. The more stamina you have the more attacks you can perform.

Collections

Collections are a neat little sidebar to the game. The premise here is that you have the opportunity to pick up certain items through jobs or gifting (which will be discussed later) and there are seven objects in each collection. When you are able to collect all seven objects in a particular collection you can then vault it and receive a bonus (ie) energy points, health points. There are at the time of this writing 16 collections.in the New York section and five in the Cuba section. This gives the game a little more depth and intrigue. The bonuses are not that mind-blowing so I wouldn't kill yourself in trying to obtain them, but take them as they come. They have little affect on the overall strategy of the game but do provide for a little interaction with your Mafia family and gives a little added enjoyment to the game. Gifting

Gifting in Mafia Wars demonstrates family unity and respect. There will be time when certain items are needed by someone in your Mafia and they will request them. These items could be for collections that the want to complete or weaponry that they would like to obtain. I strongly suggest that you gift when you can because there will be times when you need something and members will be more willing to gift to you when they see that you are a generous team player who has each members back. It is like the old saying "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine".

Ashbringer may not yet ring a bell for all World of Warcraft newbie players. So what is Ashbringer and what is the story behind it? Ashbringer is actually a sword of Alexandros Mograine of the Silver Hand who is a former Highlord. The blade was named after Alexandros "The Ashbringer" and his mysterious capability to chop the undead into ashes. Alexandros Mograine has a son named Renault who betrayed and murdered him using the sword.

It was then discovered that Mograine was ressurected as a Death Knight and he still kept the sword Ashbringer in his possession. However, the sword has already been defiled due to his murder and is now transformed and called the Corrupted Ashbringer. Later on, his son Darion was forced to kill his soul using the sword and killed himself as well. But when Darion betrayed Lich King, the sword was purified and was relinquished to Tirion Fordring.

Many players of World of Warcraft agree that the Ashbringer is one of the most hyped and lore-rich items in the game. Nevertheless, players still don't have the ability to obtain this item. He revealed facts about this item are expected to change in the future as the sword's story is slowly being revealed to players especially with the release of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

So for those who would like to know more about the Ashbringer, here are some background information about this item. After the betrayal of Artha, the Silver Hand was dissolved while the leaders that remained gathered to form the Scarlet Crusade. The Highlord position was assigned to Mograine, while the Ashbringer became the most deadly weapon in their arsenal.

Then Balnazzar wanted to use the Scarlet Crusade as his weapon against the Scourge and set right the past failure of the Burning Legion to conquer the Lich King. But Mograine endangered the plans of Balnazzar. As a result, Balnazzar made an agreement with Kel'Thuzad to defeat the Highlord Mograine.

Balnazzar tried to corrupt the mind of Mograine's son, Renault. They connived and set up a trap in Stratholme for Mograine in order to kill him. Renault led his father there together with High Inquisitor Fairbanks, where the gang of Scourge awaited. While Mograine and Fairbanks are defending themselves against the enemy, Renault fled the scene.

As the fighting continues, Fairbanks got trapped under a pile of dead bodies while Mograine continued to battle the undead easily. However, Mograine finally got tired and dropped his blade due to fatigue. This was the time when his son Renault came out of nowhere, grabbed his father's sword Ashbringer and killed him.

As a result of his treacherous act, the blade was simultaneously corrupted. Renault then left the blade with his father's corpse and told the Crusade that it had been lost. The only witness to this heinous act was Fairbanks who could only hear it happen.

While some do it just for recreation or to make watching a TV game more exciting, there are others who will always wager on their favorite team or player, period. However, there is an elite third group out there who bet sports with one and only one purpose in mind...to make money. Whichever group you fall into, sports wagering must be treated the same as any other financial investment. To be done properly (and profitably), here are some very crucial rules one must follow.

Rule #1 - Use Proper Money Management - This rule is the one that is most neglected and explains why Vegas keeps on building all of those multi-billion dollar casinos. Never wager more than you can afford to lose, so be honest with yourself on what you can comfortably set aside for recreation or otherwise. Secondly, never wager more than 2% of your total bankroll on any single wager. If you set aside $1,000 for gambling, your individual bets should be in the $20 range and no more. If you're winning, the 2% per wager automatically increases as your bankroll increases. Conversely, if you're on a losing streak and the bankroll goes down, the size of your bets will decrease accordingly. Unexplainably, wins and losses often times run in streaks, so slowly increase your bets on a hot streak and back off on cold streaks. Stick with 2% and never double up and chase lost money.

Yes, you can bet a 3-team parlay, and if you win, it normally pays in the vicinity of 6 to 1 in football and basketball. If it were really possible for anyone to consistently pick 3 out of 3, parlays (and teasers) wouldn't be offered by the sports books. Stick to straight action only. If you bet 3 teams straight action and only win 2 of the 3, you've just made money. Hook them all together in a parlay and you must win all 3, or you're sunk. It's a proposition for losers only, so don't do it.

Rule #5 - Perform Due Diligence - As a bettor, you normally have the opportunity to do research well in advance of having to make that final decision on a wager. That gives you an automatic advantage over the bookie, so use it to the fullest extent. One of the best ways to win at sports wagering is to maybe find your own special niche and then follow it closely. Usually this task is killing large groups of some type of monster or mob for a long period of time. Anyone engaged in grinding will need some minor restorative items, such as food and bandages. Power levelers should also turn off the chat rooms, since these eat up valuable time.

There are a lot of people who don't find the idea of grinding for hours terribly exciting. There's no reason to avoid going on quests once the grinding gets tiresome. To optimize time taken by going to the Auction House between quests, create a level one character expressly for the purpose of buying and selling. This character could buy items and mail back them to the higher level character. The level one could also be sent gold through the mail to buy these goods in the first place.

Always remember to go to the inn before logging off, then immediately begin grinding again upon returning. There are said to be some especially good opportunities for grinding in Alterac Valley - but going there will often help the opposing faction win some victories. It is usually a bad idea to help the defeat of one's own team members, race or faction, so this area is best avoided, unless the player doesn't mind this sort of behavior, which might be viewed as backstabbing.

For many, the best weapon for grinding is the sword. If aggro is gained from the sword, then a backstab cannot be initiated. Instead, a stun will be required for the backstab action to be taken. "Aggro" is when a monster becomes aggressive and seeks to attack the character. The important weapon statistics to consider for grinding purposes are agility and attack power, with stamina coming in a close third. Try out a number of weapons to see which one best suits the individual style of play. Whatever weapon is chosen, be sure to have some talent points stocked away for it. Talent points can be used to increase the damage an attack causes. More attack damage means faster monster killing, which means more experience points in a shorter period of time. This is, of course, the very essence of power leveling.

Rogues who are grinding should keep in mind just how good a sword can be for the purposes of backstabbing and for killing monsters quickly. Stay out of the Alterac Valley if at all possible, to avoid helping out the opposite faction. It isn't a good idea to kill the people on the same side as the character. And while power leveling, remain focused. Stay out of the chat rooms for any reasons, since those can be a huge time sink, and avoid visiting the Auction House constantly. This may be a good way to acquire gold and items, but not the best way to gather experience points.

One of the best ways to cut time while level advancing is very simple. Just take more than one quest at a time. In fact, try to accept as many quests as possible. Too much downtime defeats the point of power leveling.

Horde leveling is a third method of leveling up more quickly. This is a great technique for characters between level 30 and level 60. Horde leveling is completing quests with a large group, as opposed to smaller groups or solo. The best way to do this is with a group that is of a higher level than the character seeking to power level. Horde leveling makes the more dangerous levels of the World of Warcraft safer and opens up bigger level grinding opportunities. Just remember to spend those talent points that have been accumulated. These increase the potential for delivering damage, which makes monsters die faster. Fast is good, since speed is a main component of power leveling.

Moving from level 1 to level 60 does not have to take years. Using some of the methods outlined above, it can be a relatively quick trip. The first ten levels of World of Warcraft should be accomplished through taking as many quests as possible and doing as many simultaneously as can be handled. It's really not possible for me to tell you to go buy some items, resell them, and make a lot of money. The most obvious reason is because each server / faction is it's own unique economy. Even if I could tell you to go buy Frozen Orbs when they are below 50 gold and resell them for 75 gold once people obtained that information and started doing it on every server it would no longer work for everyone.

That is why the most important thing for making money in the auction house is being able to find your own niche and know when to sell.

If you really sit down and think about it, there are optimal times to sell items and times that are bad to sell items. Obviously, on the weekend when every single person is off of work, school, or sitting around playing WoW; that's probably not a good day to try to sell stuff unless your selling an item that raiders need because that's when most raids happen.

So you can see by that example that you have to apply common sense and logic to your gold making strategies. On a weekend a lot of people are running heroics, so why would you try to sell Frozen Orbs on the weekend? On the other hand, it is probably one of the best times to buy Frozen Orbs and other items people are farming because they usually sell for cheap.

Generally speaking, you'll see prices for a lot of things go down on weekends and come back up during mid week. This is generally true but like I said each server is very unique.

So instead of me going over items to sell, which is going to be epic fail, let's go over methods you can use to ensure you always have success on the Auction House.

1 - Tracking Prices

Whether you write this down or make a spreadsheet like I have for it, you'll want to track prices. Start off by picking a few items that you might be interested in selling. Maybe they come from a place you farm regularly or a profession you have, whatever the item is, let's track it.

In this tracking sheet it is necessary that you record both the lowest selling, highest selling, and total quantity available on the Auction House at least 1x per day. Make your sheet cover everyday of the week and record this information to the appropriate day. If you are good with graphs, make a graph. After a few weeks of tracking you will begin to see an obvious pattern and no exactly when to buy and when to sell this item.

2 - Hold onto Items

You should always expect to maintain a bunch of items that you are selling in your inventory. You never want to flood the market with hundreds of the same thing, you will only bring the prices down on your server. Keeping items to sell at your price, on your terms, and when the time is right is one of the smartest things you can do.

Most people think they can just get a bunch of items, get rid of them quickly, and make a lot of money. This is almost never the case.

You should buy a guide that has you leveling only with quests. While it is nice to do some instances and grinding, until the later levels you will level much faster with just questing.

If you see a part of the guide that says "grind here until..." you need to throw it away. You will be doing plenty of grinding at 80 without needing to do more to get there. Unless you have a specific reason to grind on a certain mob or in an area, you should be questing for max XP.

I always look for a talent guide as well. I like to level new characters, but always find myself wondering what I should spend my precious talent points on. There are tons of ways you can spend your points, but I want the best ones for grinding. I have tried looking on the web for talent specs, but all I end up finding are forum debates about which is best. The problem is that they rarely show the actual spec, and doing an armory check on the player just shows their current spec (which is usually a PvP or Raiding spec.) Many of the good guides out there come with a talent guide.

I also look for an in game guide and addons to show me where to go. I have used free resources, like Questhelper, but often find them more confusing than anything. It will show you all the locations with an arrow pointing to the closest objective, which is often not the best place to go. They help, but most of the guides come with one that is loads better.

In the past I have always grown up with the idea put in my head that video games were for Children and not Adults. Well, times have changed and now there are games I think we can safely call games for adults, and more appropriately put "the man's game". In my opinion, the man's game must meet certain standards.

One standard is that the game must not be some mindless activity. If I were to use movies as a comparison such as a Bruce Willis movie where random shootings of several hundred bullets from a 15 round magazine are common place a man movie is one where several hundred bullets can be shot, but they at least change the magazine from the gun. In a video game, there needs to be a more realistic or fantasy setting such as World of Warcraft that makes it a challenge. Basically what it comes down to is a simple test. If you find yourself playing a game that requires you only to shoot at things that move and move direction than it's not a man game. If you have to think strategy on how to solve a problem, weather fantasy or real, then you are playing a man game.

The Second standard that a game must meet in order to be a man game is that It must be a game that you don't just "beat" and then finish. There are to many games on the market that you play level 1 through 10, beat it and then it sits on your shelf for years. My favorite example are simulation games because you never really win a simulation game. Now even though a game such as world of Warcraft or other theme and scenario games you do eventually beat these games you can always go back and improve your game. I like World of Warcraft because there is always something you can do better and something you can always change. You can beat it one way, but there is another way you can beat it. I don't think this is a game that will ever collect dust.

The third requirement again can be compared to movies. There are lots of movies out that have two, three and even four sequels. Most of these movies start out good, and then go downhill from there. By the time you have seen number three you never want to see the first one again. The same thing applies with video games. If the third version of a game sucks than it is not a man game, But if the game continues to get better with each new version than it can be considered a man game. The video game must keep up with technologies and be exciting with each new version. World of Warcarft has this down to a science. This is a game that is hard to debate as to being one of the best games when it comes to continuing sagas. There is always something new that games want, and want now.

The final measurement of a true man game is the level of addictiveness. If you start to play a game in the evening and forget the time only to realize that the sun is coming up and you have to be at work in an hour than that is a true man game.

Manastones contain a certain statistic and a certain value. For example, Manastone: Accuracy +12. In this case, this Manastone would add 12 to your Accuracy value if you placed it into a socket of one of your equipped items. Similar to the enhancing, only the following slots contain sockets: chest slot, legs slot, shoulders slot, hands slot, feet slot, weapon slot, primary slot, and secondary slot. Also, the higher the rarity of the item, the more sockets it contains:

White Item = 1 Socket
Green Item = 2 Sockets
Blue Item = 3 Sockets
Orange Item = Usually 4 Sockets, sometimes 5 Sockets

Similar to enhancing, placing Manastones into sockets can fail. The penalty for this is that all Manastones already in sockets for that item are destroyed, and the item returns to having no Manastones. The positive is that this is quite rare, and usually only occurs when placing a high level Manastone into a low level item. However, at this time, there is no way to tell the exact level of a Manastone; just know that the higher the value, the higher the level. Also, green Manastones are harder to socket than white Manastones.

A good strategy for placing Manastones into sockets (when an item has more than 1 socket) is to socket your least valued Manastone first and your most valued Manastone last. This way, the chance for failing and wasting your most valued Manastone is reduced to a minimum.

You can also remove Manastones from items by visiting a NPC. These are usually found around major cities and towns. You pay a small fee and the NPC will remove your desired Manastone from your item. However, the Manastone will be destroyed in the process.
